Dungeons and Dragons (DND) is an old role playing game and starting last year Mr. Bulgrien hosted games after school.  It is a game that pairs math and critical thinking skills in a fun and involving way.  You are thrown into adverse conditions with every turn and you have think in clever ways to get yourself out of them.  DND is something I found only a year ago but it is something that I now really enjoy.

 

 It makes you as a player think in complex ways and you have to always think about how your decisions will affect you in the future.  I had to (P104) find new and creative ways to solve problems.  It really makes you think outside of the box and gets your mind thinking in new and different ways.  It is something that really helped me in daily life; it allowed me to think in multiple dimensions so I solved many problems in creative, easier ways.  There many examples of me creatively thinking, but one that stands out in my mind, is when we fought the Rage Drake.  We were all hanging on to the last bit of health we had, except for our wizard who we kept safe through the whole of the encounter.  We knew that we were all too low to get any real damage done to him so we had to think how we could kill the beast.  We thought for a good fifteen minutes and figured it out.  Everyone except our wizard surrounded the beast and made our best attempt to distract and hinder him while our wizard moved to the other side of the map and prepared the finishing blow.  We used our rope to hold him back until we were all knocked unconscious but by that time our wizard was ready and he ended the entity with one final blow.  After playing many games of DND I really understood that no matter what adverse conditions you are in, you can always find a way out if you really think about it.

 

Being creative in your thinking can save you in many situations.  I believe strongly that in every situation there is a way out and if you can think outside of the box you are almost guaranteed to find it.  My career in the future will involve many hiccups and problems but if I can be clever and inventive I will find solutions, and I will be able to run my business successfully and smoothly.  As for right now in my last year of high school, I am under a lot of stress and I run into a lot of problems which don’t make anything easier.  I get through them though because I find clever ways to make solving them easy, which in turn makes this year less stressful.
